The Codd Bottle: A Brief History
The Codd bottle, invented in 1872 by British engineer Hiram Codd, was a breakthrough in sealing carbonated drinks. Instead of using a cork, it employed a glass marble and rubber gasket that sealed the bottle under pressure. Consumers released the seal by pushing the marble inward, where it rested in specially shaped chambers to allow smooth pouring.
Codd bottles became widely used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in the UK, Australia, and India. Their distinctive design made them popular, though many were broken by children eager to retrieve the marble, making surviving examples collectible today. The bottle’s use declined with the introduction of cheaper, lighter crown caps, but it remains in limited use in parts of India and is valued by collectors as an important piece of beverage-industry history.

  • Made in the UK
  • High quality Pewter (May contain Traces of Lead)
